Set clocks forward one hour tonight

Alarm clocks will be buzzing more than just an hour early this Sunday.

A decision by Congress brings daylight-saving time three weeks earlier this year.

And though most agree the longer days are worth it in the long run, no one is really looking forward to Sunday morning.

The time change — spring forward — officially occurs at 2 a.m., but most folks will do so before going to bed tonight.

Not many will start their day earlier than Tommy January, owner of Jerry’s Donuts in Vidalia.

“We come in between 2 and 3 a.m., but we’ll start at 1 (Sunday) instead,” January said.

January and another employee work in the early morning to prepare all the donuts they sell each day.

“Most people are just going to bed at that time,” he said. “People don’t realize what time we do start in the morning.”

January, who opens his shop at 5 a.m., is expecting an even smaller Sunday morning crowd this week. But he’ll be ready, regardless.

“I guess I’ll just have to go to sleep an hour earlier,” he said.

Like the donut shops, several local churches said they’ll be affected Sunday morning too.

“We normally just expect it, the Bible study hour especially will be lower in attendance,” said Joshua Roberts, associate pastor of worship at Vidalia First Baptist Church.

“As humans, we hate transition, and it’s just a day of change.”

Roberts said church-goers who forget to change their clocks expecting to attend morning Bible study will still get there in time for the morning worship service, which starts an hour later.

The lingering effects of the change will last well into the week for most folks.

And Monday morning will be no fun at Vidalia Upper Elementary, Principal Darla Johnston said.

“It’ll be very stressful Monday,” she said. “They’ll just be really sleepy. We won’t get much out of them.”

Students will be waking and loading buses in darkness, and when their normal bedtime comes it may still be light outside.

“Parents need to make sure they get into bed at their bedtime,” Johnston said. “And you can try to wean them over the weekend, let them go to bed a little earlier.”
