Six straight base hits in the bottom of the fourth inning were enough to propel Franklin County to five runs and a 5-3 victory over the Cathedral Green Wave Thursday afternoon.

Trailing 2-0 and with only two hits heading into the inning off Cathedral starter Preston Edwards, the Bulldogs exploded.

Dane Hodges led off the inning with a walk, followed by three consecutive singles by J.P. Sullivan, Cable McMinn and Ryan Ratcliff. McMinn’s single scored Hodges.

Jordan Hunt then knocked a bases-clearing triple to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead. Ben McDowell then singled to score Hunt for the Bulldogs’ final run.

Cathedral (9-4) got a run back in the top of the sixth when an Edwards ground rule double scored Aaron White, but after loading the bases the Green Wave were unable to produce anymore runs.

Even with the win, Franklin County head coach Jeremy Loy said he wasn’t entirely happy with the performance.

“We looked sluggish,” he said. “We looked like a team that’s on spring break. That big fourth helped us, but other than that fourth inning they beat us the rest of them. Cathedral is going to give you a tough time every time you play them.”

The win was the sixth in a row for the Bulldogs (9-6).

The Green Wave stranded 11 runners in the game, and Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said the afternoon was a story of missed opportunities.

“We just couldn’t get the breaks,” he said. “We left 11 or 12 runners on base. It was one of those days where everything went ugly for us.”

Blaine Abernathy picked up the win in relief for Franklin County, pitching three and one-third innings and allowing one run. Colton Laird got the save, while Edwards took the loss for Cathedral.

“The last two weeks our pitching’s done a pretty good job,” Loy said. “Blaine and (starter) Ryan (Ratcliff) have done the bulk for us, and Colton and (Ben) McDowell have done a good job in relief for us. Pitching hasn’t been our problem.”

Hunt led Franklin County with the triple and three RBI. Hodges had a double, and McMinn, Ratcliff and McDowell all batted 2-for-3.

Edwards had a double for Cathedral, and Jesse Morrison and Aaron White batted 2-for-3. Daniel Jenkins was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
