NATCHEZ — The Cathedral School boys basketball team had three players in double figures Tuesday night as the Green Wave cruised to a 66-39 win over visiting Centreville Academy.

Jarrell Johnson scored 13 points and Caleb Upton and D.J. Perry added 10 each to lead the way for Cathedral offensively.

But it was Cathedral’s defense that shined in the first half of the contest.

“Defense is what we’re trying to keep getting better at,” Cathedral coach Peter Arnold said. “The defense creates easy baskets off steals.”

Cathedral only gave up 12 points to the Tigers in the first half and led by 27 points at the break.

Centreville head coach Jason Horne said his team struggled offensively against the Green Wave pressure.

“Turnovers (hurt us), and we couldn’t make layups,” Horne said. “I think we missed 20-25 layups. We played good in spurts, and we’ve played good in the past two games. I don’t know what happened. It’s like they didn’t know what a basketball is.”

Arnold said the Green Wave also took advantage of Centreville trying to attack the offensive glass.

“They were crashing the offensive boards hard, and we were able to get rebounds and get it to the guards and go,” Arnold said.

Johnson snatched nine rebounds to go with his 13 points, and Perry collected eight rebounds to go with his 10 points.

Khalil Brice, nine points, Jamon Gray, eight points, and Carl Hammitte, seven points, rounded out Cathedral’s leading scorers.

The win was the Green Wave’s fifth straight, and Arnold said his team has played well since the football players returned to the team.

“Having the football players gives us depth that we didn’t have,” he said. “We have nine or 10 guys, so we can keep up the intensity out there.”

Both teams scored 27 points in the second half to give Cathedral the 66-39 victory.

Horne said his team has a lot to work on before they host Trinity Episcopal Thursday.

“We just have to go back to work,” he said. “They are going to learn what practice looks like (today).”

Chance Humphreys led the Tigers with 16 points and seven rebounds in the contest. Guard Ethan Noland added seven points for Centreville, and center Chase Delee scored six.

Cathedral is now 5-4 on the season and will host Wesson Tuesday. Centreville dropped to 2-4 with the loss to Cathedral.

Centreville girls 51, Cathedral 33

Centreville guard Katie Berry’s 18 points were the difference in the Lady Tigers’ 51-33 victory over the Cathedral girls basketball team Tuesday night at Cathedral.

Berry’s consistent scoring, coupled with double-digit outputs from Renee Miley, 13 points, and Tori Rouse, 10 points, helped the Lady Tigers outscore Cathedral by nine points in each half of the contest.

Centreville led 11-6 after one quarter of play and 27-18 at the half. The Lady Tigers then scored 12 points in each of the final two quarters to double their lead.

Ginny Daggett lead Cathedral with 13 points. McKenzie Milligan scored seven for the Lady Green Wave, and Wesley Calloway added five.
