Monterey walks home with win

Three hits in a game is, for the most part, not supposed to translate into a win. That is, unless 15 walks by the other team is mixed in.
Which is what happened Monday afternoon as the Monterey Wolves defeated the Epps Panthers in five innings in the District 3-B opener for both teams.
“We took advantage of what they gave us,” Monterey head coach Hank Zizzi said. “We moved runners up with good base-running. They didn’t throw strikes and we were patient at the plate.”
Monterey scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and then two more each in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the third innings to take a 9-2 lead.
The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to enact the 10-run rule. Jared Ensminger’s single scored the game-ending run. The only other hits by Monterey (4-10, 1-0) were by Brennan Russell and Ross Lipsey, and they were also singles.
“In the end we got some timely hits to score some runs,” Zizzi said. “We’re going to meet a much tougher opponent on Thursday in Forest.”
Winning pitcher Trey King allowed just three hits, two of them by losing pitcher M. Moore.
Block 11, LaSalle 7
OLLA, La. — In one of the quickest 10-inning baseball games in recent memory in terms of length of time, the Bears held on to defeat the Tigers Monday night in a thrilling District 3-1A game.
Even though the game went 10 innings, it lasted less than two and a half hours. And that was despite the fact that both teams combined for 27 hits and 10 errors. The game was the district opener for Block while LaSalle was playing its fourth district game.
The Bears won the game with their bats as they slugged out 16 hits to make up for seven errors by the defense. They broke a 7-7 tie with four runs in the top of the 10th inning while the Tigers were unable to score at all in the bottom of the 10th.
Block (6-10, 1-0) scored three runs in the top of the second inning and later scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. But LaSalle (2-2 in District 3-1A) forced the game to go to extra innings by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth.
Ethan Trisle went 4-for-5 with a double – the team’s only extra-base hit of the game – two runs batted in and three runs scored. Winning pitcher Justin Winborne was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. For LaSalle, Seth Mathews was 2-for-6 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.

On the mound, Bradley gave up just one hit while the defense behind him committed just one error.
The second game didn’t quite start the way the first game did for the Hounds, but it finished in a big way.
Huntington (9-7) scored five runs in the top of the first inning and nine in the top of the second. The Confederates scored two runs in the bottom of the second, but the Hounds put the game away with 13 runs in the top of the third.
The Hounds wound up with 19 hits in the second game with Corbett going 4-for-4 with two doubles and a home run and winning pitcher Landon Willard going 2-for-2 with a home run. Jordan Wilson and Jordan Jones each went 2-for-3 with a double.
Claiborne Academy 13, Tensas Academy 10
HAYNESVILLE, La. — The Rebels’ bats were almost unstoppable in the first three innings. It almost wasn’t enough as they had to hold off a furious rally to defeat the Chiefs Monday afternoon.
Claiborne Academy was on fire early on as it scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. By the end of the third inning, the Rebels enjoyed what appeared to be a comfortable 13-3 lead.
Then all of a sudden, the Rebels’ offense came to a screeching halt as they were held scoreless the rest of the game.
Tensas scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to trail 13-5. After they scored one run in the top of the sixth, the Chiefs rally came to an end after scoring four runs in the top of the seventh.

LIBERTY — Despite having to go through several delays for unknown reasons, the Rebels managed to hold off the Rams in a high-scoring game Monday night.

The Rebels trailed at one point 7-3, but rallied with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to trail by just one run and then took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Rams scored one run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 9-8, but the Rebels put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of that same inning.
