NATCHEZ — Thursday night’s matchup between the Tensas Academy and Adams County Christian girls was a case of youth versus experience.
And the experience of ACCS won big, as the Lady Rebels cruised to a 63-28 victory. With a comfortable lead in the second and fourth quarters, ACCS head coach Melanie Hall began subbing in her backups in order to gain valuable game experience.
“That helps us tremendously,” Hall said. “You never know what could happen out there on the court (as far as injuries go). All these girls being able to play, get good minutes and us being able to mix them in can only help them get better.”
Tensas Academy head coach Nicky Pere said he also saw Thursday’s game as a means to gain experience, saying he viewed it as a baptism by fire, of sorts.
“Hopefully this will toughen us up and get us to the point where they want to be on the other point of the stick,” Pere said. “Hopefully, them learning under fire — learning the hard way will help.”
Trinity Episcopal
The Trinity Episcopal girls struggled to hit shots Tuesday night as the Lady Saints fell to Silliman 43-25. Silliman’s Bradleigh Brignac had 11 points, and Ashley Hurst scored 10 points for the Lady Wildcats.
Meanwhile, Trinity failed to have anyone score in double digits, but the Saints managed to make the game close after starting slow, with Silliman leading only 21-16 at intermission.
But the Lady Wildcats pulled away 38-22 at the end of the third, and Trinity was unable to climb back from another deficit.
Trinity also committed a number of fouls, as nine of Sillimans 11 points in the second quarter came on free throws. Trinity head coach Richy Spears said technique was the main culprit behind the fouling.
“We were just not moving our feet,” Spears said. “(It was) bad mechanics.”
Cathedral School
Despite trailing 33-13 at the end of the first half Monday night, the Cathedral High School didn’t go away quietly against Salem.
After a comeback attempt led by Ginny Daggett and her 19 points, Cathedral managed to cut Salem’s lead 45-44 with 2:28 left in regulation. But the Lady Green Wave managed just two points after that, and Salem was able to secure a 51-46 win.
Cathedral girls coach Randy Smith said he was happy to see his girls fight back after being down, but they would also have to start off games better in the future.
“That’s something where it’s just after the holidays. I think they have a lot of turkey left in them,” Smith joked.
“We had a little practice (Sunday night), but you can’t really get into basketball shape over the holidays. But that was the best game we’ve played so far, so I’m pretty excited about (the future).”
