Just when it appeared that the Monterey Lady Wolves were about to close out the Mangham Lady Dragons Friday afternoon, a lack of experience showed up again.

Monterey allowed Mangham to score all three of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a walk and three bunts as the Lady Dragons rallied for a 2-0 win over the Lady Wolves at the Vidalia Tournament.

Monterey head coach Hazel Brallier felt like her team let another close game get away even though she said her team played better than Mangham did throughout the five-inning contest.

“I keep telling myself we had a young team,” Brallier said. “We hit the ball better than they did. Holly Clay pitched better than their pitcher pitched.”

Monterey, the visiting team in this game, scored two runs in the top of the first inning and kept that 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth.

“We walked the first batter and they bunted the next batter (Parker). Instead of getting the out at first, we tried to get the lead runner at second, but the umpire called her safe,” Brallier said.

Then the next batter, Jerrette bunted and once again the Lady Wolves (4-17) didn’t go for the sure out at first. Instead, they tried to get the lead runner out at third, but she was safe and the bases were loaded.

The very next batter bunted and even though she was thrown out, two runs scored to tie the game at 2-2. Mangham then won the game when McDonald bunted. She was thrown out at first, but Jerrette scored the winning run.

Clay had a solid game on the mound as she gave up just three hits and the defense committed no errors. Kotten somehow ended up being the winning pitcher and Mangham overcame three errors.

Monterey will take on Harrisonburg, an 8-2 loser to Rayville, in a loser’s bracket game today at 11 a.m.

Caldwell Parish 4, Vidalia 0

VIDALIA — It’s one thing to lose a game in your own tournament. It’s another to get completely shut out.

Unfortunately, both of those things happened to the Lady Vikings Friday night at the hands of the Lady Spartans at the Vidalia Tournament.

Winning pitcher Holly (no last name given) held Vidalia to just three hits in five innings. Brittany Whittington took the loss for the Lady Vikings as she gave up four runs on six hits.

Caldwell Parish broke a 0-0 tie with two runs in the top of the third inning and scored two more runs in the top of the fourth. The Lady Spartans were also helped by four errors committed by Vidalia.

Vidalia (17-9) will take on the loser of the 9:45 a.m. game between Warren Central and LaSalle today at 12:15 p.m.

West Lincoln 5, Franklin County 0

BROOKHAVEN — Heather Huff pitched seven scoreless innings and gave up just two hits to lead the Lady Bears past the Lady Bulldogs Friday night.

But it wasn’t just the pitching of Huff that hurt Franklin County in this game. The Lady Bulldogs committed four of their five errors in the bottom of the first inning, which allowed West Lincoln to score three runs.

Alexis Cook hit a solo home run later in the game as she went 2-for-3. Losing pitcher Melissa McFarland gave up five runs, but only one was earned, on six hits.

Franklin County was eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the week after losing to West Marion and Tylertown in a pair of Division 7-3A game.
