Cathedral made quick work of Enterprise Monday night, scoring 13 runs in four and a half innings of play at Chester Willis Field as the Green Wave defeated the Yellow Jackets 13-0 to maintain their hold on the district’s top spot.
Cathedral opened up the game in a big way during the first inning, as starting pitcher Preston Edwards struck out two of Enterprise’s first four batters. At the plate the Green Wave scored six runs off no hits. The Yellow Jackets committed five errors in the inning on defense which led to a 6-0 Green Wave lead.
“They (Enterprise) looked a little nervous in the first inning. They missed plays they normally make,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “Us taking advantage of their mistakes early on was the key to the game.”
After Edwards struck out three straight batters to retire the side, the Green Wave tried to get their bats going in the bottom of the second. David Ozburn hit a shallow left field single to score Jesse Morrison. After a Daniel Jenkins hit a sacrifice fly that scored a run, Kole Junkin cleared the bases with a stand up triple to expand the Green Wave lead to 10-0. Three more runs scored, including an RBI off a Morrison single, before the inning ended with Cathedral leading 13-0.
“This was by far the worst game we have played all season,” Enterprise head coach Seth Lofton said.
Prior to Monday’s game, Enterprise who is 5-13 overall and 3-5 in district play, was third in the district behind St. Aloysius and Cathedral.
Yellow Jacket Rodney Barker replaced starting pitcher Peyton Green, who took the loss on the mound for Enterprise, in the third inning. The Green Wave did not score a run after the change, but several younger players saw some time at the plate.
Preston Edwards picked up the win for Cathedral as they improved to 16-4 overall and improve to a perfect 8-0 in district play. Retaining the number one spot.
Preston threw a lot of strikes, and if he is throwing strikes, then we are in good shape,” Beesley said.
Cathedral now gets set to face St. Aloysius on the road Wednesday. The Flashes will have to beat the Green Waves by five or more runs in order to take the lead in the district. Patrick McDonough will get the start on the mound for Cathedral.
