Prep roundups: NHS girls edge McComb

McCOMB — The Natchez High School varsity girls basketball team improved to 8-1 on the season as the Lady Bulldogs edged McComb 44-43 Friday night.

Ashley Minor tallied 15 points for NHS, and Kiara Johnson scored 12 points. McCom’s Angelina Earl had 15 points, and teammate Alexis Johnson finished with 13.

NHS trailed 20-18 at the half and 32-31 at the end of the third.

NHS boys 60

Dearrius Griffin scored 17 points for the Bulldogs, but NHS fell to 4-4 on the season as the Bulldogs were unable to sustain a strong start through four quarters.

NHS scored 23 in the first — the most by either team in one quarter — but managed just nine points in the second quarter to trail 33-32 at the half. The Bulldogs finished with 28 points in the second half, while McComb pulled away with 39 second-half points.

Quincy Washington had 14 points for NHS, and Derrian Johnson finished the game with 12 points. McComb’s Antonio Johnson led in scoring with 22 points, and Cabellis Luckett added 21 points. Quartarius Smith totaled 12 points on the night.

NHS will play at Terry next Tuesday.

Wilkinson County boys 56,

Tylertown 52

WOODVILLE — A first quarter where the Wildcats outscored Tylertown 23-18 proved to be the difference as Wilkinson County won its second game of the young season.

Phillip Fountain led the Wildcats with 17 points, and Devin Voorhies scored 12 points. Wilkinson County led 37-29 at the half and 46-40 at the end of the third.

The Wildcats (2-6) will host Hinds AHS today.

Cathedral boys 59, Delhi Charter 51

MONTEREY — The Green Wave secured itself a spot in the Monterey Tournament championship game today with a win against Delhi Charter.

Jamon Gray led Cathedral with 21 points, and Caleb Upton added 11 points. Cathedral and Delhi Charter were tied 27-27 at the half. Cathedral trailed 54-38 at the end of three.

Cathedral will play in the finals at 12:15 this afternoon.

Monterey girls 43, LaSalle 39

MONTEREY — Kaley Baker had 18 points for Monterey as the Lady Wolves advanced to the championship game of the girls’ Monterey tournament.

The Lady Wolves will play Delhi Charter today.
