Just twenty-four hours after being blanked by Kilbourne 9-0 on the road, the Monterey Lady Wolves rallied late to defeat the Lady Hawks 3-2 Tuesday afternoon in a key District 3-B game.

Seventh-grade pitcher Ellen Bairnsfather picked up the win on the mound for Monterey as she allowed two runs on four hits. The Lady Wolves could just as easily have lost this game after committing four errors, but those miscues didn’t hurt that much.

Trailing 2-0 after four and a half innings, Monterey’s rally started in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jenna Chandler laid down a bunt and made it to first base and Ariel Hector doubled to bring Chandler in.

Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Wolves tied the game at 2-2 when Brooke Baker walked and scored on a doubly by Sonny Clay. Taylor Morace singled to move Clay over to third and Taylor Spann, who was 2-for-3, laid a bunt down and Clay scored what proved to be the game-winning run.

Monterey improved to 6-20 overall and finished at 3-3 in District 3-B after Epps forfeited all of its district games. Right now the Lady Wolves are in second place in district play, but that could change depending on the outcome of the Kilbourne-Forest game later this week.

Montgomery 14, Block 10

MONTGOMERY, La. — Despite committing eight errors and being out-hit 12-8 by Block, the Lady Tigers got the big hits when they counted as they held off the Lady Bears Tuesday afternoon.

In this key District 3-1A match-up for both teams, winning pitcher Kayla Lacroix hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning that tied the game at 4-4 and Leah Cormane had a two-run home run during a six-run rally in the bottom of the fourth that gave Montgomery a 10-6 lead.

After the Lady Tigers added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to give them a 14-6 lead, Block tried to rally in the final two innings. Sonni Manning, who went 3-for-5, had an RBI triple in the top of the sixth as the Lady Bears cut Montgomery’s lead to 14-8.

Then in the top of the seventh, Block (11-11, 4-3) scored two more runs to make it a 14-10 game, but the rally fell a bit short.

Ashley Kirby led the Lady Bears by going 4-for-5 with a double. Unfortunately, losing pitcher Misty Davis had a rough outing as she gave up 14 runs in five and two-thirds innings.

Lacoix was 2-for-4 and Jada Davis went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Montgomery, which improved to 3-2 in district play.
