The Green Wave will play Salem Tuesday night at Chester Willis Field on senior night en route to hosting the District 7 1A baseball tournament on Thursday.
Cathedral will loose six seniors including starting Patrick McDonough, third baseman David Ozburn and right fielder Forrest White.,as well as non-starters Lee Hash, Thomas Ballard and Dane Olivero at the end of the season.
Cathedral, 17-4 overall and 9-0 in district, will play the no. 4 seed in the tournament, which has yet to be determined. St. Aloysius, a team that lost to Cathedral Wednesday night as the Green Wave clinched the regular season title, will play the no. 3 seed, which is also yet to be decided.
“We’ve had a pretty good season so far, but winning the regular season does not guarantee a spot in the playoffs,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said.
He said in previous years, teams that won the regular season were guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. The issue was voted on by the district coaches, but he and a few others who wanted to keep things the same, were out voted and the change was made.
Now Beesley’s main concern is getting his bullpen ready for the tournament.
“We played pretty well in district, but when you get into tournament situations, it all depends on the depth of who you have pitching on the mound.”
Beesley said he does not know if he will start McDonough, or whether he will perhaps go with Preston Edwards, Dylan White or Braxton Fondren.
At the plate, Beesley said his club has been up and down, but has managed to get hits when they needed them. Jesse Morrison is batting .477 for the season, while teammate David Ozburn is batting .426 and Preston Edwards is batting .340 at he plate.
“We have got to continue to score when we have runners in scoring position,” he said.
