Civic duty calls on May 5, but for those who won’t be in their voting district that day, absentee voting begins Monday.

Voting — which will take place at the office of the Registrar of voters in the Concordia Parish Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. — will last until April 28.

Absentee votes cast through the mail are due on May 4.

Parish-wide, there is an initiative on the ballot to renew a 10-year, 10-mill property tax.

The tax will be used by the Concordia Parish Police Jury for public building maintenance. The buildings include the Doty Road Center in Ferriday, as well as both courthouses in Vidalia.

The tax generates more than $1 million yearly.

A quarter of the funds generated go to the upkeep of public buildings. The remaining 75 percent of funds are directed to the parish drainage fund.

For residents of Clayton, Ferriday, Ridgecrest and Wildsville, a property tax in the form of a three-mill tax is proposed to fund Recreational District 1.

Currently, the tax is 2.74 mills.

Monterey citizens will also consider the renewal of a 10-year, 6.29-mill tax to fund Recreational District 2.

Members of the U.S. Armed Service or their spouses or dependents may absentee vote by mail.
