Trinity takes second place at golf tourney

Trinity Episcopal walked away from the MPSA Class A South State Tournament with the second place title, but their coach wasn’t pleased with the performance.

Led by Jackson Bryant’s 77, Trinity had a team score of 368. Bryant ended up in a playoff with Sylva Bay’s Wilkie Hayes to determine who would take the third- and fourth-place medalist trophies. Michael Scudiero shot an 89, Hayden Butts a 96 and Parker Jones a 106.

“The team is capable of playing better,” Trinity coach Bub Mullins said. “After seeing those first scores and some other teams’ scores, I am surprised we finished second.”

Hayes, who also shot a 77, forced the playoff with Bryant with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole, which was also the playoff hole.

And for a while it seemed like the playoff would never end. After both players missed opportunities to end the playoff, they each wound up birdies the first two times and a par the third time. Hayes finally won the playoff with a birdie on the fourth playoff hole to take third-place medalist honors.

Other top finishers included students from Glenbrook and Claiborne Academy.

The last time current Glenbrook sophomore Kyndall Ardoin played in a tournament at Beau Pré Country Club was five years ago.

“I played in the Gulf States Junior Tournament,” Ardoin said. “I played nine holes and shot a 54. I was pleased with that.”

But Ardoin was even more pleased with the way she played Tuesday at the MPSA Class A South State Tournament as she won first-place medalist honors with a round of 3-under-par 69.

“It was fun. It was one of those days where everything goes right,” said Ardoin, who last year won both the Louisiana State Women’s Championship and the Louisiana Junior Championship. “Kicks go in your favor and the putts drop.”

The only hiccup on Ardoin’s round was a bogey on the par-5 eighth hole. She more than made up for that with four birdies.

It was also a good day for Claiborne Academy’s golf team as it won its third straight South State championship with a team score of 325. The Rebels were led by Ryan Linder, who took the second-place medalist trophy after shooting a 1-over 73. Chase Chiasson and John Wilder each shot an 82 and Stephen Dowies had an 88.

“This is Ryan’s seventh tournament this year,” Claiborne Academy coach Joe Michael said. “He’s finished second twice and won three tournaments. He’s the defending South State champion. He’s our best player.”

Not only has Claiborne Academy dominated South State the last three years, but it has been very good this year. The Rebels have won every tournament they have participated in this year.

“To be undefeated all season is an accomplishment that doesn’t happen very often,” Michael said.

Riverdale Academy, led by Adam McDonald’s 85, finished third with a team score of 381 and River Oaks, led by Bryant Letson with an 84, came in fourth place with a team score of 385.

Those four teams will advance to the Class A State Tournament, which will be held at Frenchman’s Bend in Monroe, La., at 9 a.m. Monday. In addition to the top four teams, four players who played for teams that did not qualify will also play at the State Tournament.

Those four players are Ardoin, Hayes, Sylva Bay’s Denver Rogers (81), and Tallulah Academy’s Cason Landrem (90).
