Vidalia will host a familiar foe when they take on Episcopal tonight at home.

Heading into the game Vidalia is 21-10 overall, while Episcopal is 21-11, and both teams match up well.

“Baseball is big in Baton Rouge, and they do things right,” Vikings head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “But we also do things right here.”

But at this point in the post season anything can happen. The Vikings have relied on solid pitching, and Hoffpauir said his team has been working on hitting.

“At this point we are going to play our game, and hopefully we can stay ahead in the ballgame,” he said.

The first round is tough, Hoffpauir said, but the second round is even tougher.

“There is not much you can do now. Emotions will play a factor,” he said.

Hoffpauir said that was evident in the Vikings first round game, where Vidalia had to come from behind to beat Many.

“I expect a great crowd and a great atmosphere. It’s going to be a good day to play baseball and we get to do it at home,” Hoffpauir said.

Trinity getting set for round two

NATCHEZ — Trinity is getting set to face Heidelberg today at 7 p.m. in the second round of the MPSA state baseball playoffs on the road.

Saints head coach Matt Mason said the Rebels have two strong left-handed pitchers and a solid catcher behind the plate, but he said his team faced two good left handed pitchers at Glenbrook.

“Hopefully we will be ready this week,” he said.

As a result, Mason said, the Saints will have to be selective at the plate and when they try to steal.

But the Saints (13-12) have been swinging the bats well during the playoffs, and Mason said his team is going to do whatever it takes to get runners on base and in scoring position.

He said pitching and defense have been his club’s strong suit this season.

“If we pitch well and play good defense, then I feel we have a good chance to win the series,” Mason said.

With the Saints possibly playing two out o three games on the road, Mason said winning the first game would have an impact on the series.

“Winning the first game on the road would be big for us,” he said. “But it’s a three game series and you have got to win two games. It doesn’t matter which two, but we have got to find a way to win.”
