VIDALIA — Polls will be open 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday for voting on several tax renewals, Registrar of Voters Golda Ensminger said.
On the ballot for all parish voters is the renewal of a 10-year, 10-mill drainage tax.
The tax generates about $1,182,000 a year, Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington said.
One quarter of those funds — $254,580 — go toward the maintainence of parish buildings such as the two courthouses in Vidalia and the Doty Road Center in Ferriday.
The remaining $731,711 is directed to the parish drainage fund, Ferrington said.
The tax will expire at the end of this year.
“I can’t imagine anyone being against this tax,” he said. “Every day (the police jury) is out somewhere doing drainage work.
“If it’s not renewed, we’ll really be suffering drainage-wise.”
If the renewal vote fails, Ferrington said the police jury would likely put it on the ballot for the Nov. 17 election.
Saturday’s election will also include a tax for for Recreation District No. 1 for residents of Clayton, Ferriday, Ridgecrest and Wildsville.
Saturday’s recreation vote will be for a three-mill property tax. The tax is currently 2.74-mills.
Residents of the Monterey area will also be voting to renew the 10-year, 6.29-mill tax that funds Recreation District No. 2.
