After winning the MPSA South State baseball title Friday night, the Huntington Hounds found themselves in a familiar position Wednesday night as they fell 9-2 to Bayou Academy in game one of the MPSA state baseball championship series.

Huntington dropped the first game of their South State series against Heidelberg, but bounced back in game two and captured their third straight South State title in game three.

The Hounds will once again have to win game two in order to extend the series and their season.

“We’ve been in this position before. Whether it will happen again is up to our players,” Hounds head baseball coach Mitch Ashmore said.

The Hounds went on top first, scoring one run in the top of the second inning, but Bayou Academy bounced back in the latter half of the inning when a dropped fly ball allowed two runs to cross the plate with two outs.

Bayou scored five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and two in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

“We made a lot of mistakes,” Ashmore said. “It was one of our typical meltdowns.”

The Hounds defense committed four errors against Bayou Academy over the course of the game, whle their pitching gave up five hits.

Winning pitcher Caleb Reed did not make things any easier for Huntington as he retired 14 batters by strike out in seven innings of work.

“We were pretty much dominated at the plate,” Ashmore said.

The Hounds scored their only other run in the top of the seventh inning.

Huntington will host decisive game two on Thursday at 7 p.m. A win for the Hounds would force a another decisive game three, while a loss would result in an MPSA State runner up finish.
