A field of 66 players took part in the second annual Tracey Denning Roberts Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday afternoon at Panola Woods Country Club.

This year the team of Christian Krueger, Doc Anderson and Tom Matthews beat out 21 other three-man teams by turning in a 12-under par score of 60 to finish as the scramble’s champion.

“We had a good day. The greens rolled well, but we could have done better on the par threes,” Krueger said.

He said his team did not hit a single par three green in regulation, but added that the play of his teammates made up for their shortcomings.

“Doc Anderson chipped in on one par three, and having an ex senior PGA player in Tom Matthews helped out too,” Krueger said. “Without those two guys we couldn’t have won.”

The tournament has been held the past two years to honor the memory of Tracey Denning Roberts, who passed away from a brain aneurism at age 43, and to raise money for the Cathedral Development Fund.

The tournament was the brainchild of Roberts’ close friend and tournament coordinator Pam Horton, who said she was inspired by Roberts’ love for golf.

“Before she died she started golfing and loved it,” Horton said. “She also loved Cathedral.”

Last year’s tournament raised $8,000 for the development fund, and Horton said she expects this year to be just as successful.

“We are hoping to do the same if not better,” she said. “This year we had more hole sponsors.”

And with the growing success of the tournament, Horton said she plans to continue to hold the annual event.

“We’ll do it every year, and the money will go to Cathedral because that is what the family wanted,” she said.
