The days for the old Ferriday Junior High School — long fallen into disrepair — are numbered.

The Concordia Parish School board voted in mid-April to give the final go-ahead for the demolition of the Texas Street building.

The dates for demolition have not been set because the school board is waiting for bids, Superintendent Kerry Laster said.

The demolition will hopefully be done at a cost of between $80,000 and $100,000, Laster said.

Because the building has asbestos in it, it cannot be bulldozed.

“It has got to be contracted out to someone who can properly remove the asbestos from the ceilings and tiles,” Laster said.

The building’s roof is about to cave in on one end, she said.

All of the electrical wires and fixtures have been pulled out Laster said.

“Tiles are popping out of the floor,” she said.

In April, school board Business Manager Tom O’Neal said the building must be torn down regardless of the school board’s budget for legal reasons.

The building is a fire hazard, and there has been past evidence people may have been sleeping in the building, Laster said.

It would be cheaper to build a new building than to repair it, Laster said in April.

“(It) would probably cost at least $1,000,000 to bring it up to current code,” she said.

The Ferriday High School band practices next to the building, and the school board hopes they will be able to mark a practice field off in the area once the demolition is complete, Laster said in April.
