Dreams really do come true, and two Natchez boys are soon to experience theirs.

Jakob Mercer and Nathan Jones are headed to Disney World this weekend courtesy of the Make a Wish program.

“Make a Wish is fully committed to granting one heart felt wish of a child,” program manager Beth Holmes said.

Make a Wish is a nonprofit organization that grants wishes for patients with threatening illnesses. The patients are usually ages 2 to 18. The foundation has been in Mississippi since 1989, and was the 36th to be chartered.

The objective of the program is to “grant the wishes of children with life threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.”

After a patient is referred to the program, Make a Wish determines the patient’s medical eligibility, then a team determines the patients true wish. The patients and parents are interviewed, and the wish is granted.

Eight-year-old Jones will leave Saturday and drive to Disney World with his mother, grandparents and sister. Nathan was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease last year. There is no cure for the disease.

“All Nathan wants to do is see Mickey Mouse,” Nathan’s mother, Ann said.

They will eat breakfast and supper with the characters, in addition to watching the fire works show at night, Jones said.

“The objective for the trip is encourage and restore health within a patient,” Holmes said.

Another local family will be joining the Jones family. Kenneth and Amanda Mercer will fly to Disney World this weekend with their son Jakob. Jakob and Nathan will be able to share their wish with Mickey together.
