NATCHEZ — The numbers are in, and the results of a May auction selling county equipment was a big success, county supervisors said at Monday’s meeting.

Don Durham, president of Durham Auctions, Inc., said he was very pleased with the results.

“I think we did lovely,” Durham said. “I think everyone’s real pleased with it.”

The company auctioned heavy road equipment in mid-May, totaling more than $1 million for all the pieces, County Administrator Cathy Walker said.

That’s a much better figure than the roughly $700,000 low estimate the auction company guessed, Supervisor S.E. “Spanky” Felter said.

“I feel like we did real well,” he said. “They had to guarantee us so much money, and that’s why we did good. Now, that’s the way to do business.”

The money the county earned is going toward buying new equipment to replace the worn-out and outdated old equipment, he said.

“Some of the old equipment, we didn’t need and so we’re not replacing it,” Felter said. “We’ll just hire out if we ever need the work done.”

The new equipment cost approximately $1.4 million, Walker said.

Other county entities sold some equipment, too, she said. The sheriff’s office sold seven old, high-mileage vehicles for a total of $7,765, and the airport sold two 1970s vehicles for $706.80.

All in all, Supervisor Sammy Cauthen said he was very satisfied with the sales.

“I appreciate it,” Cauthen said. “I think y’all did a heck of a job.”

After an executive session discussing industrial development, potential litigation and personnel, the board voted to recess until 9 a.m. Monday to discuss an inter-local agreement between the city and county regarding running water and sewer to the proposed private CCA prison.
