BROOKHAVEN — Had it not been for a strong defensive effort by Natchez High in the second quarter, the Bulldogs could very well have lost to the McComb Tigers Tuesday afternoon at the Brookhaven High School Tournament.

Natchez High held McComb to just eight points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs, with four players scoring in double figures, took a 69-60 win over the Tigers.

The Bulldogs led the Tigers 17-16 by the end of the first quarter. Then it was the second quarter that proved to be the difference in the ball game as the Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 15-8 to take a 32-24 lead into halftime.

McComb tried to rally in the third quarter by holding Natchez High to 10 points, but the Tigers only cut the lead in half as they managed 14 points. The Bulldogs then put the game away by putting up 27 points in the fourth quarter while the Tigers had 22 points.

Dearius Griffin led Natchez High (3-2) with a game-high 15 points. He was followed by Quincy Washington and Derrian Johnson with 13 points apiece and Davonta Green with 12 points. McComb was led by Quartavius Smith and Antonio Johnson with 13 points each.

Natchez High will take on West Lincoln at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
