NATCHEZ — A man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly robbing a convenience store clerk at gunpoint.
At 6 p.m., Natchez Police received a call that a convenience store on U.S. 61 North had been robbed.
“A guy came in the store and asked for a package of cigarettes,” Chief Mike Mullins said Wednesday. “When the clerk turned around, he had his hand over an object and said he had a gun and to give him all the money in the cash register.”
The cashier gave the man a small amount of money and left the scene, Mullins said.
An eyewitness gave officers a good description of the vehicle, he said.
At roughly 11:30 p.m., an Adams County sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle on Canal Street. When the deputy tried to stop the vehicle, the driver fled.
The driver of the car weaved in and out of traffic, driving over one lawn and sliding into a tree, according to sheriff’s office reports.
The deputy chased the vehicle to Vidalia, where Vidalia police joined the chase. The suspect stopped and jumped out of the vehicle near the Budget Inn, tried to run and was apprehended.
Charlie Ray Brown, 40, 700 Carter St., Vidalia, was booked into the county jail, where he was charged with felony fleeing and fugitive from justice. He was wanted on a warrant for forgery in Columbus, Mullins said.
Natchez Police charged Brown with armed robbery Wednesday afternoon. He was being held at the city jail without bond.
Brown is also a suspect in a gas drive-off at a U.S. 61 South convenience store, Mullins said.
