NATCHEZ — The stakes weren’t high and the trophies for first, second and third place were far from the minds from bowlers at Rivergate Bowling Saturday.
Teams of five people paid $200 to bowl three games. The money earned was donated Pleasant Acre Day School. Teams that competed included Britton & Koontz Bank, Leadership Natchez, who also organized the event, Natchez Regional Hospital and Natchez Community Hospital. Rivergate Bowling and Concordia Bank also submitted $200 donations but did not have teams at the event.
“We earned a total of $1,400 from the tournament,” said Janifer Robinson of AmSouth Bank.
In addition to the donations from the tournament entries, a raffle was held for two tickets to country western singer John Anderson’s upcoming concert and dinner for two at a local restaurant. The tickets were sold for $2 each.
“The total made from the raffle will also go to the school,” said John Lee, co-chairman of Leadership Natchez.
The entire amount made from the raffle won’t be known until Monday, Robinson said.
Lucky contestants Wanda Frye from team leadership Natchez and Janee Arnold from AmSouth won the raffle.
All the donation will be used to renovate and make additions to the small out-of-code building that Pleasant Acre Day School currently uses.
“A new wing will be added for a new kitchen, meeting area, Mardi Gras bead construction room and all the bathrooms will be made handicap accessible,” Lee said. “Before the bathrooms were so small you couldn’t even fit a wheel chair in them.”
The Leadership Natchez group has been working hard to raise the estimated $33,000 needed to rectify the current problems of the school.
“This is the last leg in our fundraising,” Lee said. “Now we hope to involve some new and current local businesses to help out with the rest of the renovations.”
Before the tournament Leadership Natchez had already raised over $20,000 for the renovations.
“Everyone in Leadership Natchez did a lot to get all this together,” said Leadership Natchez Chairwoman Jaki Robinson, who was also on the Britton & Koontz Bank team of the winning teams.
Although Natchez Community Hospital placed first, Natchez Regional Hospital placed second and Britton & Koontz Bank placed third at the tournament the real winners are the students from Pleasant Acre Day School, participants said.
