JACKSON (AP) — Alcorn State University president George Ross has been released from a Michigan hospital and is recuperating at his home after three weeks of treatment for leukemia.
‘‘It’s my goal to be playing golf in August and begin my new job at ASU in September,’’ Ross said in a statement released Monday by Central Michigan University where he is vice president of finance and administration.
Ross said he will rest at his Mount Pleasant, Mich., home as he continues to recuperate. Ross will continue to receive treatment, but adds that his doctors say the prognosis for a full recovery is good.
Ross, 52, a native of Utica, was hired in the spring to succeed the late Clinton Bristow Jr., who died of heart failure last August.
Ross was to take over as president on July 2. State College Board officials said this past week that the starting date was delayed until Sept. 1.
Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells, which help fight infection. Aggressive chemotherapy is typically the treatment for acute leukemia — initially for one month.
