NATCHEZ — Derek Pyron has been a part of Trinity Episcopal his entire life.
A student there from kindergarten through high school, Pyron now has a daughter and twin boys that attend Trinity.
As a member of Mayfair, a Trinity fundraising organization, he understands the need for former Trinity students to stay involved with the school, he said.
“At a small school, we need all the fundraising help we can get,” Pyron said. “I’ve been a part of Trinity my whole life, so it’s kind of second nature to help do whatever they need done.”
A big part of that fundraising effort will happen this Friday through Sunday, when Duncan Park will host the Mayfair Tennis Tournament.
The tournament will include women’s doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles divisions. Prizes will be awarded to main bracket winners and runners-up, as well as consolation bracket winners.
This is the second year for Mayfair to put on a tennis tournament, after interest was expressed in doing one last year.
“We had a tennis tournament for a number of years, and then didn’t have one for a number of years,” he said. “Last year, there was a group of tennis players at the school that decided it’d be another good way to raise money,” he said.
And Pyron also said it wasn’t just Trinity people that were interested in tennis.
“The interest in the tournament was not just at Trinity, but in all of Natchez,” Pyron said. “There have been a lot of new tennis players here in town that started playing in the last two to three years. We had a good turnout last year, and had a lot of competitive matches. Everyone enjoyed it, and we plan to keep doing it every year as long as they continue to enjoy it.”
Pyron said he’s expecting 60 to 65 players to show up. Play begins Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 8 a.m. Sunday’s start time has yet to be determined.
