NATCHEZ — Sky Logan had the game of his life Monday night at the District 6 North Sub-District Tournament, hitting two home runs as the Natchez 12-year-old All-Stars defeated Copiah 11-1 in four innings at Carroll-Jones Field.

Logan hit a line-drive over the fence to right field for a two-run home run as Natchez took a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. But it was his second homer of the game that proved to be huge.

With Natchez holding on to a 3-1 lead and two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Logan hit a fly ball that just cleared the fence in straightaway centerfield for a three-run shot to give the home team a 6-1 lead.

“When I hit it, I didn’t think it was going to carry and it kept on carrying,” Logan said. “The first one, when I hit it, I knew it was gone.”

After Kyle Bradley singled to keep the inning going, Tyler Duncan gave Natchez even more breathing room with a two-run home run for an 8-1 lead.

“Coach (Gus Perry) told me to put the bat on the ball and hit it,” Duncan said. “When I hit it, I pretty much knew it was gone.”

Natchez pitchers Daniel Huffines, Tanner Martin and Christopher Perry provided fans with plenty of drama of their own.

Huffines, the starting and winning pitcher, allowed two batters to reach base with one out in each of the first two innings, only to strike out the next two batters to end each inning without giving up a run.

“The other team came out and hit the ball in the first inning,” Natchez head coach Gus Perry said. “We brought Tanner Martin in to start the third and he had control problems.”

Martin lasted just one-third of an inning after allowing one batter to reach on an error and walking three other batters. He gave up one run and Copiah still had the bases loaded when Christopher Perry came in.

Perry struck out Garrett Chapin and Jason Snyder to get out of the jam and preserve Natchez’s 3-1 lead. Chapin and Snyder were the same two players Huffines struck out to end the top of the first.

“Christopher came in and shut them down as far as hits,” coach Perry said. “I felt like if I brought him in, we could play him tomorrow night.”

“Leaving nine on the bases, you can’t win,” Copiah head coach Jay Strait said. “We were in the ball game. We just couldn’t capitalize.”

After Natchez scored its five runs in the bottom of the third, Perry allowed a one-out single by Douglas Strait, who went to second on an error and third on a passed ball. But Perry got the next two batters to strike out to squash any thoughts of a rally.

“Sky Logan had two big home runs. Tyler Duncan had a big home run. Sam Fury had a big hit,” Perry said.

Natchez 10-run ruled Copiah with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cody Rhinehart reached on an error with one out, went to second when Colton Webb grounded out to third base and third on a passed ball. Then the game got real interesting.

Colton Farmer reached on an error that scored Rhinehart to make it a 9-1 game with two outs. Sam Fury singled and then Farmer and Fury advanced on a passed ball. After Andrew Moroney was walked to load the bases, it appeared that Copiah was going to get out of the inning when Huffines hit a towering fly ball to the second baseman, but he couldn’t hold on to it and Farmer and Fury both scored before Moroney was tagged out at third base.

“Three errors in the last inning,” Strait said. “But they have a good team.”

Natchez will take on Wesson today at 8 p.m. at Carroll-Jones Field and Copiah will take on the Lincoln County Nationals today at 6 p.m. Wesson eliminated Lincoln County from the tournament with a 14-2 win Monday.
