MONROE, La. — Thanks to a five-run rally in the top of the fifth inning, the Vidalia 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars defeated Rayville 10-5 Wednesday afternoon at the District 5 tournament.
Vidalia does know that it will play today at 8 p.m. However, its opponent wouldn’t be determined until the rest of Wednesday’s games, including the Ferriday-Monroe game, were completed.
“The key inning was the fifth inning. We had some real good hits with two outs,” Vidalia assistant coach Jon Nunnery said. “We had a hit and then a walk. Then we got two outs and then everybody started hitting the ball.
Vidalia head coach Whest Shirley was unable to be with the team for the game because of a death in the family, but his players made sure they would continue on in the tournament with the big win.
Alan Doyle started the game on the mound for Vidalia and went three and one-third innings. Winning pitcher Hunter Randall pitched the final two and two-third innings.
“They both did a great job,” Nunnery said. “Hunter came in and shut them down, but Alan also pitched a great game.”
Among those who had clutch hits for Vidalia were Chandler Grayson, Hayden Nunnery and Cole Cangemi.
