Alcorn names Green outstanding grad

LORMAN — Brittney Green, a chemistry major from Morton, is this year’s Outstanding Graduate for Alcorn State University. She is a graduate of Morton High School (Class of 2003) where she was named both STAR student and valedictorian of her class.

The recipient of the Award for Excellence is selected by a committee of faculty members from various academic units of the university.

Each academic unit nominates its top graduate each year.

The committee evaluates the nominees in the categories of academic accomplishment, extracurricular activities, special recognitions and awards, and other attributes including an essay from each nominee entitled “Why I should be chosen outstanding student of the year at the Alcorn State University.”

The winner of this award receives a check for $1,000 and a plaque of achievement. Green received the plaque from Malvin Williams Sr., interim president of Alcorn State University, at the commencement ceremony.

At Alcorn State University Green was selected most outstanding freshman chemistry major and most outstanding junior chemistry major; she has served as president of Khem Club; president, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Senator of the Senior Class.

She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; the ASU Gospel Choir; the National Council of Negro Women; and the Louis Stokes Mississippi Alliance for Minority Participation Program.

In June 2004 and June 2005 she participated in summer internships at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and in 2006 she took part in an international research experience in Bangalore, India.

Additionally, she does summer research at St. Jude Children Research Hospital in Memphis.

Recently, she won first prize in a poster presentation of one of her research project at the annual LSMAMP National Research Symposium sponsored by Jackson State University.

Green has finalized her plans to continue her education: she will be attending medical school in Toledo, Ohio.
