NATCHEZ — This weekend will provide plenty of activity, much of it free to Miss-Lou residents. Other events will support nonprofits.

A Gilded Christmas

The Pilgrimage Garden Club will host its monthly meeting at a buffet lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Friday in the Queen’s Room of the Carriage House, welcoming Alan Shuptrine from Chattanooga, Tenn., to present his program, “A Gilded Christmas.”

Since 1985, Shuptrine has led a team of skilled artisans in offering the fine handcrafted art frames, furniture and decorative works of art. He specializes in the time-honored old world and traditional methods of gilding, particularly water reproductions.

Shuptrine will conduct a workshop in which attendees will create decorative gilt objects and he will discuss the history of gold leaf and the lost art of water gilding.

Angels on the Bluff

Each year, the Natchez City Cemetery stages a historically-based presentation featuring selected gravesites throughout the property. This production presents local citizens or family descendants, who portray individuals buried in the cemetery. 

Tickets for the tour are already sold out. For those who have tickets, a shuttle from the Natchez Visitor Reception Center will leave every 15 minutes for the Natchez City Cemetery, beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

During the tour, actors will give commentaries while dressed in period costumes. Several are accompanied with musical tributes. The event benefits the Natchez Cemetery Association.

Movie Under the Stars

A movie will be screened under the stars from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Vidalia Amphitheatre on the Vidalia Riverfront. The film will be family-friendly. Admission is free, and hot dogs, popcorn, drinks and hot cocoa will be available. Call 601-807-4691 for information.

Out of the Darkness walk

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will sponsor a walk to raise money for foundation’s research and education programs to prevent suicide from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Vidalia Amphitheatre on the Vidalia Riverfront.

Wirt Adams’ Raid into Natchez Civil War Reenactment

Reenactors from around the south with gather to recreate Wirt Adams’ raid into Natchez. The public is welcome to attend and watch the festivities as both “Yankees” and “Rebs” reenact the battle in the “bowl.”

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Historic Jefferson College. Admission is free.

NBCL Fall Fashion Show

The Natchez Business and Civic League will host a fall fashion from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Robert Lewis Middle School.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Carter’s Pavilion or from any NBCL member.

Second Saturday

Shops and galleries in downtown Natchez will extend their hours for the public for Second Saturday events from 5 to 8 p.m.

ArtsNatchez Gallery on Main Street will be open to visitors, with a new exhibition highlighting the works of local artists DeMarie McDaniel Walters and Allyn DeVries. Walters’ art encompasses many mediums that reflect her love of brilliant colors. DeVries is a well-known artistic weaver and crafter of beautiful jewelry.

The Rolland Golden Gallery will feature his works of his Mississippi River series, which is returning from the Masur Museum of Art, Monroe, La. Besides paintings, there will be prints and mixed media on view. Wine and cheese will be served. The gallery is located at 419 Main Street.

Humane Society 2012 Calendar Show and Reception

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society’s 2012 Calendar Show and Reception will be 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Natchez Fine Framing and Art Gallery, located at 518 Main St.

Calendars will be available for purchase. All proceeds will support the shelter animals. The public is welcome.

Nubian Social Aid and Pleasure Club Coronation

The Nubian Social Aid and Pleasure Club will have its annual coronation at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Natchez City Auditorium.

The club will present its maids, junior dukes, maids-in-waiting, junior dukes-in-waiting, king, queen and royal court.

Admission is a canned or dry good. Attire is semi-formal. Children are welcome if accompanied by their parents.

Big River Jamboree

Experience traditional country music at its best at the Big River Jamboree at Shrine Hall in Natchez.

Set in a family atmosphere, the band SureFire features an array of the best country music this side of Nashville, featuring old and new songs with some rock and roll thrown in.

Gospel hour begins at 6 p.m. with classic country and rock beginning at 7 p.m. There are also door prizes and raffles.

Shrine Hall is located on Morgantown Road.

Inspirational music

The Northeast Louisiana Delta African-American Heritage Museum will present a dual entertainment and inspirational program at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Arcade Theater in Ferriday. Call 601-870-8733, 318-336-8504 or 601-660-2661 for information. The public is welcome.
