Natchez falls victim to rain, Texas

LAKE CHARLES, La. — A six-hour rain delay and a lack of offensive production were the last things the Natchez Rams needed in hopes of getting a high seed for tournament play at the USSSA Baseball World Series.
But for the second straight day of pool play action, the Rams were limited to just one hit as they fell to the Texas Stingrays of Houston 9-0 Tuesday afternoon.
“It was just puddles and puddles of water. But I’m not going to make any excuses. We didn’t hit the ball well,” Rams head coach Gene Banks said.
While Javon Washington had the only hit for Natchez in the four-inning contest, the Stingrays scored nine runs on five hits and three walks off starting and losing pitcher Scott Turner, who lasted just two innings.
The game was originally scheduled to start at 8 a.m., but because of rain in Lake Charles, the first pitch wasn’t thrown until 2 p.m.
Richard Chatman was scheduled to be the starting pitcher for Natchez, but Banks said that Chatman didn’t feel comfortable on the mound. He would up starting at right field and then ended up at third base when Givonni Dent relieved Turner in the top of the third inning.
