NATCHEZ — Cathedral’s new summer work out program has made the football team “Bigger, Faster, Stronger.”

“The BFS program is focused more on explosion strength and speed,” head coach Craig Beesley said.

This is the first year Cathedral has used the BFS program. According to the Web site, the program is for everyone and focuses on all levels of athletic performance.

“We have been looking at this program for awhile now,” Beesley said. “It works for us because we are a smaller team and most of our guys play both sides of the ball.”

Cathedral has workouts four times a week splitting time between the weight room and field. On the field, they work on speed and endurance by running hills and doing sprints.

Each player has a separate work out sheet with specific goals to meet.

“The great thing about this program is it adjusts according to the person,” strength and special teams coach Tom Graning said.

At the end of each work out each player signs off on their run times and lifting goals. A computer program calculates the results and sets up a work out for each athlete.

“If a guy needs to work more on bench, it will adjust for that,” Graning said.

Cathedral is in the second session of their eight-week summer work out program. Each session is four weeks long.

“We have about 28 to 34 kids that come in and work out.” Beesley said. “A lot of them are going into the ninth grade. We eventually want to start seventh and eighth graders on this program.”

Senior Skylar Bacon definitely sees the benefits of the BFS program.

“We are already a lot faster than last year,” Bacon said. “I know I’ve gained more strength. This will help us this season.”

Cathedral will start football practice August 6.
