MCCOMB — Justin Johnston hits a single to left field brings in the game-winning run as the McComb 9-year-old All-Stars rally to defeat Natchez 7-6 Wednesday afternoon at Edgewood Park to win the District 6 District Tournament championship.
Johnston’s game-winning hit with runners on second base and third base occurred after McComb had tied the game earlier in the bottom of the sixth on a base hit to right field and then a costly error by Natchez.
“It was a tough loss,” Natchez head coach Leroy Myles said. “But the kids played good defense. We blew it at the end. We were up 6-5 going into the bottom of the sixth. We led all throughout the game.”
Natchez would have had to defeat a McComb team that scored 63 runs in their first four games twice to win the district championship and advance to the state tournament in Magee, which starts July 27. Unfortunately, Natchez could not hold on to its lead and force a second game.
Natchez’s Will Moffett had the only extra-base hit of the game with a double.
“I am proud of them. I wish I could go back through it all over again with the same bunch of kids,” Myles said. “From my point of view, we had a better team.”
Jonah Bankston was the winning pitcher for McComb and Tyler Wilson took the loss for Natchez.
