NATCHEZ — Candidates for District 5 Supervisor said they hope to change the county for the better.

Ronald Allbritton (D) said he would try to improve education and create jobs by bringing in a plant to manufacture his own invention, machines he says lay fencing and wire.

“I want to put a child daycare center in the plant to take care of workers’ children while they work,” Allbritton said. “I also want to put an educational facility in that plant.”

Outside the plant, Allbritton has goals of repairing roads and building recreational facilities.

Allbritton said he was the best qualified for the job of supervisor.

Candidate James Berry Jr. (D) said his main concern was trying to better his community.

“I want to deal with bringing jobs, recreation, something for the kids, and all that goes hand-in-hand with lower crime and making Natchez a better place,” Berry said.

Berry said he has contacts with people “around the world” because he travels with his son to rodeo competitions.

“This economic problem that Natchez has gone through has affected me and my family, as well,” Berry said.

Incumbent District 5 Supervisor S.E. “Spanky” Felter (D) said he was running again to complete his work.

“I want to finish a lot of stuff I’m working on, like improving fire ratings throughout the county,” Felter said. “We’re working with senators and the governor and the MDA on a lot of industry.”

Felter said he was proud of doing his part to avoid wasteful spending.

“Everybody tells me I’ve done a good job,” Felter said. “Nobody has called and fussed at me yet. I’ve tried, I’ve done my best, and I’m going to continue to do my best to serve the people of District 5.”

Jessie Turner (D) said he would work with the board to get things done and be visible.

“Adams County needs a supervisor that can be a team player as opposed to working against each other,” Turner said.

If elected, Turner said he planned to “streamline our budget to find other dollars to help recreation. It’s just making sure the spending is done properly.”

Turner currently serves as a vice president of United Mississippi Bank in Natchez.

“I’ve dealt for years in the finance and banking arena,” he said. “I can assure the voters that I will be prudent and accountable.”
