Vidalia — Following the unsuccessful effort by his attorney Wednesday for a new trial, Bryant Bethley will stand to hear his sentence this morning for the April 2010 killing of Reginald “Chucky” Green.
A jury convicted Bethley Oct. 21 for one count of Second-degree murder and three counts of attempted second-degree murder.
Judge Kathy Johnson could sentence Bethley in the seventh District Court to the maximum penalty of a life sentence plus 150 years in prison.
The charge of second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without possibility of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
Attempted second-degree murder carries a range of 10 years to a maximum 50 years in prison.
Concordia Parish District Attorney Brad Burget said Thursday Johnson denied Derrick Carson’s motion Wednesday for a new trial. He said the law says 24 hours must lapse between a motion for a new trial and the sentencing order.
And all motions for a new trial must take place before sentencing, Burget said.
The charges stemmed from an April 3, 2010, incident in which Bethley was accused of firing shots into a parked Chevy Blazer. Green was killed and passengers Myesha Leonard, Kevin Carter and Kenneth Leonard were unharmed.
