MEADVILLE — Courtney Reid’s run-scoring groundout scored the go-ahead run and Monea Cameron’s RBI sacrifice fly brought in what proved to be the game-winning run as Franklin County hung on for a 4-3 win over Wesson Friday afternoon.
The game was tied at 2-2 when the Lady Dawgs went to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shaniqua Cameron started the rally with single and that was followed by a single by Morgan Knapp. Wesson pitcher Niki McCardle then walked Jennifer Thornton to load the bases with nobody out.
Reid grounded out to first base, but Shaniqua Cameron scored to give Franklin County a 3-2 lead. Monea Cameron’s fly ball out was deep enough to allow Knapp to score, giving the Lady Dawgs a 4-2 lead.
“We’re looking better at being more selective at the plate,” Franklin County head coach Dana Smith said. “Our defense has been the most consistent thing this season, but our bats have been an emotional roller coaster.”
But with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Wesson made the game interesting again. Amanda Price got on with a single and scored when Dallas Jackson doubled. However, winning pitcher Heather Havard struck out Ciera Sturgis to end the game.
Havard improved her record on the mound to an impressive 5-1 and the Lady Dawgs won their second game in a row to improve to 5-3. Franklin County opens up Region 6-3A play next Tuesday when it hosts Hazlehurst at 5:30 p.m.
