Hazehurst crashes into Lady Dawgs for 9-6 win

MEADVILLE — The top of the fourth inning was one half-inning the Franklin County Lady Dawgs would rather forget.

A collision in centerfield between teammates Monea Cameron and Kristen Oglesby led to Oglesby bleeding profusely from her forehead and a 20-minute delay, and then things got even worse as Hazlehurst took advantage of six errors with two outs as the Lady Indians rallied to defeat the Lady Dawgs 9-6 Tuesday afternoon.

“In the fourth inning we had one out and Hazlehurst hit a fly ball to centerfield,” Franklin County head coach Dana Smith said. “The two centerfielders (Cameron and Oglesby) collided. Monea Cameron caught (the ball), but Kristen collided with Monea and Monea’s elbow hit Kristen in the forehead and busted her open.”

After play resumed following the delay, the very next batter for Hazlehurst popped up, but the third baseman for Franklin County couldn’t hold on for the catch, which resulted in the first of six errors committed by the Lady Dawgs which allowed seven runs to come in as the Lady Indians took a 9-2 lead.

Franklin County (5-4, 0-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and again in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 9-6 game, but that would be as close as the home team would get.

Kacey Smith and Jennifer Thornton each went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Lady Dawgs’ 13-hit attack. Hazlehurst, however, responded with 14 hits and was led by Kia Funches, Mo Anderson and Key Shannon, who each went 3-for-4.
