NATCHEZ — ACCS took a 30-0 thrashing by the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams Friday night.

“We didn’t play well tonight,” head coach Paul Hayles said. “They simply out played us.”

This time last year, Hayles was coaching the same players that gave him his first defeat as the Rebel coach.

“I know all of those kids,” Hayles said. “They are a good team and they looked good tonight. Coach (Sam) Byrd has done a good job.”

The Rams scored on their first two drives of the game from runs by Tremaine Norwood to make it a 13-0 game.

“They mixed it up well,” Rebel quarterback Luke Brumfield said.

Norwood had 26 yards rushing and caught a 24-yard from WCCA quarterback Cody Cullen.

“Tremaine is a heck of a player,” Byrd said.

The Rebels couldn’t sustain a drive in the first half. They had only one first down and accumulated 21 total yards.

WCCA tacked on a field goal in the second quarter to go in the half with a 16-0 lead.

The second half didn’t fair any better for the Rebels. A fumble by Duncan Guedon on the Rebels’ first drive led to a four-yard touchdown by Corey Havard.

“We had problems hanging on to the ball tonight,” Hayles said. “We can’t win if have turnovers.”

The Rebels best drive of the night came in the third quarter.

They marched 46 yards to down the field only to turn the ball over off an ill-advised pass from quarterback Colin Dollar.

“We weren’t ready to play and they were,” Guedon said.

The Rebels were never able to find a rhythm in their run game.

“We thought our offensive line was our strength,” Hayles said. “It turned out to be our weakness. We have to be better next week.”

The Rams defense relied on their quickness to get past the Rebel offense.

WCCA sealed the win in the fourth with a 70 yard run from Cory Havard.

“We did terrible tonight,” Rebel quarterback Luke Brumfield said. “We couldn’t do anything on offense or defense.”

Byrd said his players had worked hard in the off-season and deserved to win.

“This was great win for us,” Byrd said. “They played with a lot of emotion tonight.”

Both teams have big games coming up next Friday. Huntington is visiting WCCA and ACCS head across town to face Trinity.

“We have to be ready next week,” Hayles said. “We are going to play the guys that want to play, that’s all we can do.”
