FERRIDAY — Central Private’s defense held Huntington to just 202 total yards as the Class AA Rebels stunned the Hounds 20-13 Friday night.

Central Private’s quarterback Corey Santangelo had 186 total yards and two touchdowns, leaving the Class A No. 2 Hounds in the dust.

Not only could Huntington not stop Santangelo with his arm and his legs, but they had to deal with running back Bobby Muse, who finished with 28 carries for 117 yards as the Rebels had 339 yards of total offense.

Huntington (0-1) got off to a great start when Martez Tolliver received the opening kickoff and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown. Josh Lee’s extra point gave the Hounds a 7-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game.

But Central Private (1-0) cut the lead to 7-6 when Muse ran in from one yard out with 8:34 to go in the second quarter. The two-point conversion run failed.

However, the offense itself was held in check by a swarming Central Private defense. Jody Cottongin was held to just 51 yards rushing on 10 carries while Lee led the Hounds in rushing with 99 yards on seven carries.

Lee’s 36-yard touchdown run with 1:38 remaining until halftime gave the Hounds a 13-6 lead, but he missed the extra point. But the Rebels moved the ball quickly downfield in its 2-minute offense and Santangelo scored on a two-yard run with just 0:11 to go and they trailed 13-12 at the half.

Freshman quarterback Chuck Bowie didn’t throw the ball much as he completed two of four passes for 25 yards with one interception. Jordan Wilson had one catch for 35 yards.

But the Hounds’ defense had a hard time figuring out whether the Rebels were going to run or throw the ball. And when the Rebels threw the ball, the Hounds’ secondary got burned on some big plays.

Santangelo had 142 yards passing on just four completions in seven attempts and he had 13 carries for 44 yards. None of his four completions were bigger than his 35-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Bourgeios with 10:05 remaining in the ball game. Muse’s two-point conversion run gave the Rebels a 20-13 lead, and the defense made that score stand.

Huntington will hit the road to take on WCCA next Friday at 7 p.m. in the District 6-A opener for both teams.
