The show must go on. After two years and Katrina the Mississippi Arts Fair for the Handicapped will be celebrated in Hattiesburg Sept. 11 through Sept. 13.

Excitement abounds for the students of Pleasant Acre Day School. With costumes and luggage packed, rehearsals for the two performances under way, they will soon be on their way.

The theme for this year’s Arts Fair for the Handicapped is appropriately called “A New Day!” I’ve never seen two such dedicated teachers as Mary Ann Foggo-Eidt and Judy Grimsely. They have worked years with the students in various performances and always do an excellent job. All performances will be at the Lake Terrace Convention Center. Pleasant Acre Day School students will be performing two musical acts, “Salute to America” and “Roscoe on the Radio.”

It is a tribute to the Mississippi Legislature and the board members of the Mississippi Arts Fair to continue the tradition of allowing mentally and physically challenged citizens to develop their talents in signing, dancing, acting playing and instrument and arts and crafts. This is truly a life enriching experience for the students. The event encourages persons with disabilities to participate in performing arts before an audience.

Hopefully one day soon the tradition will continue on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Until then, it’s Hattiesburg, for the show must go on.
