VIDALIA — The Vidalia Police Department is investigating the death of 43-year-old Tommy Warner who was struck and killed by a car Saturday night while crossing Carter Street.
According to a statement from the Vidalia Police Department, Warner, 111 Gillespie St., was crossing the highway from the Continental Food Mart when he was struck by a small SUV driven by Kathleen McCarthy of Jonesville.
Warner’s sister, Karen Brown, said a friend who witnessed the accident informed her family.
Brown said the friend told her the driver of the vehicle backed up after she hit Warner and his body became stuck underneath the vehicle.
Vidalia Police Chief Arthur Lewis said the investigation is still open pending, toxicology reports. No foul play is suspected at this time, he said.
“This is an unfortunate accident with a tragic outcome,” Lewis said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to both families.”
Warner was self-employed, Brown said, and enjoyed painting houses, collecting coins, cooking and taking care of his mother.
Brown said she and Warner’s four other sisters and four brothers were very close to Warner. She said she loved her brother very much.
“He was a sweet person,” she said. “He would do anything for anyone.”
