NATCHEZ — It was a memorable night for the young members of the Silas Simmons Saints AYA football team Saturday night.

The third- and fourth-grade Saints battled through a tough first half against the Alexander Body Shop Rebels and scored 14-straight points in the second half to take home a 28-6 victory along with AYA Super Bowl championship trophies.

“We are very excited,” Silas Simmons coach Derek Pyron said. “The kids worked hard all year. The game started out closer than we are used to. (The Rebels) were ready to play.”

The Saints’ Sam Mosby led the offense with 97 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

“(My favorite part) was when I made my touchdowns,” Mosby said.

Mosby said he has a trophy case at home just waiting for its new addition.

“I’m going to put it with all my others,” he said.

Silas Simmons started the scoring late in the first quarter when Mosby made his way through the Rebel defense for a 22-yard touchdown run. Desanto Rollins caught the two-point conversion pass from Trey Gill, and the Saints led 8-0 at the end of one quarter.

The Saints found the end zone again two minutes later when Rollins broke a 60-yard touchdown run. The two-point try failed and Silas Simmons led 14-0.

The Rebels answered just before the end of the half with a 70-yard run by Jasin Wesberry, and the score was 14-6 at halftime. Wesberry was the catalyst for the Rebels’ offense all night, as he rushed for 84 yards on 10 carries.

Two scores by Mosby in the second half put the game out of reach. The first was a 25-yard run, and the second was a 6-yard pass from Gill. Gill also rushed for 63 yards on the night.

Pyron said he was very proud of his young team.

“We only had four fourth graders this year, so we didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “We didn’t have a lot of depth, but the ones that did play stepped up and played hard.”

Nettles Electric Rebels 34, Rodgers Energy Green Wave 8

Even though Alexander Body Shop was unable to take the third- and fourth-grade title, the Adams County Christian School AYA teams did not go home empty handed Saturday night.

The Nettles Electric Rebels of the fifth- and sixth-grade AYA League put together an explosive performance in beating the Rodgers Energy Green Wave 34-8.

“This is the second year in a row (for us),” Rebels coach David Lindsey said. “Our boys worked hard all year long. We went undefeated in the regular season and came out tonight and did what they had been doing all year.”

The offensive star of the night for the Rebels was running back Devin Gray. Gray scored three rushing touchdowns of 26, 76 and 50 yards to help give Nettles Electric the win.

Sahmaad Grayson added a 70-yard touchdown of his own to start the scoring, and Tyler Lindsey scored on a 70-yard interception return for the Rebels.

The Rebels scored the first 34 points of the game, before Rodgers Energy’s Owen Thibodeaux found the end zone on a 5-yard run.
