MONROE, La. — Despite managing just two hits and striking out 11 times against Trinity pitcher Alyx Atkinson, River Oaks somehow managed to escape with a 4-3 win Tuesday afternoon in MPSA District 5-AA action.
“It was a tough game for us. We had a couple of bad calls against us, but we’re not blaming that for the loss,” Trinity head coach Sue Geter said. “We fought tooth and nail, but it just didn’t work for us today.”
The Lady Saints took an early 1-0 lead, but the Lady Mustangs scored one run in the bottom of the first and another run in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
Trinity tied the game in the top of the third, River Oaks retook the lead in the bottom of the third.
The score remained at 3-2 in River Oaks’ favor until Malori Byrd’s RBI double in the top of the sixth inning tied the game at 3-3. But the Lady Mustangs scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to take the win.
“We had good defense and good pitching. We just couldn’t get it done,” Geter said. “It was a battle today. I told my girls we’re going to fight harder and keep going.”
