NATCHEZ — Riverfield Academy pitcher Taylor Condrey may be just an eighth-grader, but she pitched like a junior or a senior Thursday.

Condrey, who has been pitching for Riverfield the last two weeks while the starting pitcher has been out with an injury, allowed just one run on one hit and struck out five as the Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Rebels 12-1 in an MPSA District 3-AA game.

“I was real pleased with how we hit today,” Lady Raiders assistant coach Jimmy Gandy said. Even though they had just four hits off Lady Rebels pitcher Sara Beth Fuller, their speed on the bases and hard-hit ground balls forced ACCS to commit six errors.

“They’ve got a good team,” ACCS head coach Forrest Foster said. “The errors we made early in the game opened it up for them.”

Riverfield took advantage of four walks and a few passed balls and wild pitches by Foster to score four runs in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Sarah Perry scored on a wild pitch, Hannah Greer scored on a ground out by Rachael Mosley, Gabrielle Gandy scored on a wild pitch and Tori Cantu scored on a single by Abby Barthel.

The Lady Raiders put the game away an inning later as they scored six runs. Four of those runs scored on three of the Lady Rebels’ four errors. Cantu had an RBI groundout, her first of two in the game, and Lauren Cannon added an RBI single to give them a 10-0 lead.

After Condrey walked Cristin Rymer to start the bottom of the second, it looked Condrey was going to get out of the inning unscathed. That was until Lee Ann Gardner singled to right field to bring in Rymer.

“Lee Ann had a good hit. We moved Cristin over shortstop and she played good,” Foster said.

Riverfield took advantage of two errors in the top of the third to score another run, but ACCS’s defense stepped up after that while Fuller pitched no-hit ball the final three innings.

“After we started playing defense, we held the score down,” Foster said. “Sara Beth did a good job pitching today.”

Condrey got out of a potential jam in the bottom of the third. With two outs and Fuller at third and Chelsea Freeman at second, Condrey struck out Rymer to end the inning.

“Taylor has pitched well,” coach Gandy said. “Defense looked good. We started the season making six, eight, 10 errors a game. We had (two) errors today.”

The win was an important one for Riverfield. With three district games remaining, the Lady Raiders improved to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in district play with still a shot at making the Class AA South State Playoffs.
