LIBERTY — The Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints won their first game Wednesday afternoon at the MPSA Class AA South State Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament at Amite School Center only to lose their next two games to be eliminated.
Trinity Episcopal, the No. 3 seed out of District 3-AA, got off to a good start with a 6-3 win over the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars, the No. 3 seed from District 4-AA.
Winning pitcher Alyx Atkinson was a force on the mound and at the plate for the Lady Saints in the first game of the day. She allowed five hits and struck out10 in six innings and went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple.
Led by Shelby Farmer, who went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, the Lady Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score at 3-3. But the Lady Saints scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good.
Trinity wound up playing two games against teams with plenty of tournament experience. The Lady Saints could not get any offense going against Centreville Academy pitcher Emily Gaulden and lost to the District 5-AA champion Lady Tigers 10-0.
Gaulden gave up just two hits and struck out six in the five-inning contest. Centreville scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to 10-run rule Trinity.
In a match-up of district champions, Centreville defeated the District 3-AA champion Prairie View Academy Lady Spartans 5-3 to advance to the semifinals, where they will take on District 4-AA champion Columbia Academy Saturday at 12:45 p.m.
The loss to Centreville dropped the Lady Saints to the losers’ bracket, where they suffered their second and final defeat of the tournament to the District 4-AA No. 2 seed Copiah Academy Lady Colonels 12-2.
Trinity jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Colonels scored one run in the bottom of the first three innings and then ended the game by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.
