NATCHEZ — Not everybody at the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society gets a name.

But if you bat a few puppy eyes, wag a doggy tail and butter up to just the right shelter worker, a name won’t be that hard to come by.

Basically you’ve just got to have personality. You know — walk, personality, talk, personality, smile personality, charm, personality, love, personality. Oh, and a great big heart.

Just ask Red.

The dachshund is really more of a copper or bronze color, but you get the point.

Complete with a red collar, Red is one of the favorites at the shelter. He’s a bit on the shy side, and like many dachshunds, he’s a tad chubby.

Red became a shelter dog when his previous owners dropped him off saying he wouldn’t go to the bathroom outside, only inside.

But the shelter workers say that hasn’t been the case under their care.

Many of the dogs at the shelter come with excuses.

Max was too hyper, his owners said.

A black and brown dachshund, Max was dropped off in August. He didn’t look hyper Thursday, but life in a cage probably does tend to mellow you out.

Two doors and one level down are the dogs who have been at the shelter the longest. The brother and sister pair of gray terriers are diggers, their owner said when the dogs were left. They’ve lived at the Liberty Road shelter since April 12.

And the newest shelter residents at least have each other. Three mix-breed puppies were dropped off Friday, one tan, two black and tan. The tan one is the ringleader, it appears. The chubby black one is still working to escape from the shelter.

And Saturday a group of Humane Society supporters will gather at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians to make life for the named and the unnamed a little better.

The 15th annual Bark in the Park will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society.

Admission is $4 per adult, $1 per child under 6.

Dogs can be entered into several contests: cutest puppy, best costume, most friendly, most talented, most handsome male, most beautiful female, best mutt and Mr. and Miss NACHS.
