If a man’s earthly wealth can be judged by the legacy and impact he leaves behind, Glenvall Estes was a billionaire.

Estes’ observations, words of wisdom and homespun humor informed and entertained more than three generations of Miss-Lou readers.

As a sportswriter and sports columnist, Estes was legendary in our community.

His infectious laugh and self-deprecating humor were keys to his easy nature and never-met-a-stranger demeanor.

Long a mainstay in the sports community, Estes was a man whose impact was felt by young and old alike.

In the latter of 57-year writing career, he was a throw back, of sorts. When computers became the norm, Estes still pounded out words on a manual typewriter.

But while his technology might have been a bit outdated, his wisdom, professionalism and poise were ageless.

Estes died early Sunday morning after a long struggle with health issues. He lived 84 years on this earth, and his impact has been — and will continue to be — felt for generations.

A World War II veteran, sportswriter, husband, father, friend, Glenvall will be missed by countless members of this community. But he’ll never be forgotten.

If heaven has a football league, you can bet Glenvall is sitting in the pressbox this morning, keeping stats and ready to write the next edition of his “Just Talkin’” column.
