CENTREVILLE — After 39-0 road win over Columbia Academy, the Centreville Academy Tigers return to district play Friday night.
Centreville will be on the road, this time to Franklinton, La., to take on the Bowling Green Buccaneers in a key district match-up for both teams at 7 p.m.
Bowling Green comes into this game with a four-game winning streak and has a record of 4-1 overall and 2-0 in district play. The Buccaneers have outscored their first two district opponents by a combined score of 98-0.
“They’re going to be tough to stop. They’re a power running team,” Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman said. “They’ll lull you to sleep and hit you with a deep pass.”
The Tigers are led by Kyle Brown, who threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns on 7-of-9 passing last week.
“We’re going to go at it like we’ve been the last three or four weeks,” Stutzman said. “We’re going to go with a balanced attack. If we get in a game where we we’re going to have to run it, we’ll run it.”
Stutzman said he has been pleased with the progress that Brown has made this season and he added he was glad to see his receivers catching the ball last week. He hopes that continues against an aggressive Bowling Green defense.
“He’s gotten better every game. He’s putting it on the money,” Stutzman said about Brown. “Our offensive line has given him time to throw it. It’s been a team effort, basically.”
Just like Centreville, Bowling Green runs a 4-3 defense, but Stutzman said that looking at film, it looks like the Buccaneers have six players up front.
“They’re very fast on defense. They have eight seniors starting on defense,” he said. “They have athletes out there. Just looking at film, we’re going to line up and hope our line is better than theirs.”
Bowling Green’s offense is led by sophomore quarterback Cash Cooley, junior running back Kasey Colley, Cash’s older brother, and senior running back Jesse Milton.
“He’s fast and he throws the ball,” Stutzman said about Cash Cooley. “Jesse seems to get the majority of the carries. He’s fast. They’re all fast. They’ve got two tight ends, Trent Grabert and Josh Fauntleroy. They’ve got good hands.”
Centerville will try to slow down Bowling Green’s offense by going with its 4-3 defense.
“If they get under your pads, they’re going to go whistle to whistle,” Stutzman said. “Our defensive ends cannot run up field and we’ve got to make sure our defensive backs don’t fall off to sleep because they’re going to hit their tight ends eventually.”
