On Oct. 14, the descendants of Frank and Mary Ann Busby Greer will meet at the Old Greer Homestead on Mississippi 583 south of Brookhaven for their 100th Greer Family Reunion. Family and friends are welcomed to come for a weekend of fun, food, and fellowship with everyone.
On a Sunday afternoon in the fall of 1907, Frank Greer was coaxed by one of his sons to go with him to a back field to look at a problem they were having. When Frank and his son got back to the house, the rest of his family and several neighbors and friends had laid out a big table full of food. This was a surprise birthday party for Frank. It was decided at this party for a dinner once a year at the Homestead. That was the beginning of the annual Greer Family Reunion.
In the beginning it was just a Sunday Reunion and meal under the trees. Now it is a weekend and a get together. A lot of the younger ones start arriving on Friday and pitch tents and have a great time. They start a campfire that will be used Saturday night for the ever-growing dutch treat wiener roast. This event has become a focus for the young of all ages. There are always many burned wieners and marshmallows eaten that evening.
Reunion Sunday dinner has changed up some this year from the past years. This year Carey Greer is going to cook a variety of meat on a barbecue pit. Other family members and visitors are asked to bring a vegetable of their choice or dessert to put on the 50-year-old tables.
There will be drawings during the weekend for prizes as well as prizes for several special drawings. These include: The one that came the farthest, oldest in attendance, youngest present and several more. Some of the prizes have been handmade and donated to the Reunion.
As usual there will be a raffle with great prizes to be raffled off. Also, a silent auction this year will be as American Flag Lap Throw donated by Mary Grace Greer. She spent many weeks crocheting this. Money from these events finance the Annual Greer Family Reunion. For more information contact: Carlton Greer Sr., 107 Outward Bound Lane, Vidalia, La. 71373 or call 318-336-8738.
