OCEAN SPRINGS — The Natchez High Bulldogs might have had momentum going into the playoffs, but it only took two innings for that to go straight out the window.

Ocean Springs jumped out to a 7-0 lead after just two innings and coasted to a 9-0 victory in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 6A first round playoff series.

“We didn’t make the plays we needed to make,” Natchez coach Charlie Williams said. “We made six errors, and three of them were in the first inning. We just couldn’t get any kind of momentum going.”

Part of the reason for that was Ocean Springs pitcher Daniel Wineski. Wineski allowed just one hit in a complete game shutout.

“The kid pitched a good game,” Williams said. “He kept us off balance all night and kept us guessing. We didn’t do well at the plate at all.”

Ocean Springs got three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added four more in the bottom of the second.

The Greyhounds posted another run in the third, but didn’t score again until plating a single run in the bottom of the sixth.

“I think we were very nervous in the first two innings,” Williams said. “After the first two innings, we settled down and played a whole lot better.”

Game 2 of the series was originally scheduled for 5 p.m. today, but has been postponed until Monday due to forecasted storms.

The game will be played at Chester Willis Field.
