Wilkinson County wants to seize chance

WOODVILLE — Coming off a 49-8 loss to top-ranked and Region 7-3A opponent Tylertown at homecoming last week, the Wilkinson County Wildcats will try to regroup when it travels a short distance to Liberty to take on a struggling Amite County team.
Kickoff for the game between the Wildcats, 1-5 overall and 0-2 in region play, and the Trojans, 2-4 overall and 0-3 in region play, is set for 7 p.m.
After getting blown out by Jefferson County on Sept. 21, Amite County has lost its last two games by a combined 10 points — 17-14 to North Pike and 14-7 to South Pike, both home games.
And this is the same Amite County team that won nine games and went deep in the Class 2A playoffs just a year ago.
“That’s the difference between 2A and 3A,” Wilkinson County head coach John Moore said.
One thing is for sure: the winner of this game will not be in last place in Region 7-3A at the end of this game.
However, if Wilkinson County is to win its first region game since the 2005 season, it may have to do so without the services of senior quarterback Javarius Jenkins, who missed last week’s game with a bad ankle sprain.
“It was a freak injury. He’s day-to-day. We don’t know if he’ll be able to go,” Moore said.
“We’ll probably have to go with a ninth-grader, Delvin Fosselman. We might try to throw it some.”
The Wildcats may have to throw the ball a lot against an Amite County defense that goes with both a 4-man front and a 5-man front and occasionally will put a lot of players in the box to stop the run.
The Trojans’ offense is basically what the Wildcats’ defense has seen, but has not been able to slow down all season.
“It appears they run from the spread and from the I backfield,” Moore said. “They’re running it more. They’re big and they’re physical.”
Amite County’s offense is led by quarterback Jeremy Snowden and senior running back Cedric Cain.
