NATCHEZ — At the Concordia Parish candidates meeting, the public rubbed elbows with the politicians over fruit trays and chicken wings.

The forum, at the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center, was an opportunity for the public to meet with candidates running for virtually every public position in Concordia Parish.

Candidates for sheriff, clerk of court, state senate, state representative and police jury were all given five minutes to tell voters why they are worthy of their votes.

However very few of the candidates actually took time to delve into political philosophies, most simply introduced themselves and left.

“It’s a good chance to for them to state their platforms and state their issues,” said moderator Dave Kimbro.

And while the forum was a good opportunity for those running for office, it was a great opportunity for the public to see their options.

Brenda Clark of Monterey, drove nearly 40 miles to see what those running for office had to say.

“This gives a clear view of both sides,” she said “Some people may have their views already set, but this is good for everyone.”

Clark said she did not attend Thursday’s event to see any one candidate but rather get an overall view of each of them.

Clyde Ray Webber, the incumbent clerk of court in Concordia, said the event is a great opportunity for the public.

“This gives them an opportunity to better understand the office and the person,” he said. “And I never lost a nickel.”

Police juror incumbent for District 5A Jimmy Jergian also thought the idea was a good opportunity for the public.

“This lets them know where we stand,” he said.

Rickey Hollins a lifelong Concordia resident attended the event to see what the candidates for sheriff would present.

“I watch their motions, how they talk,” he said.

Hollins said he looks for a sheriff who can stay abreast of crime problems in the community.

“That’s important.”
